Irene Schindler is a published essayist. She helps college applicants identify compelling ideas for their admissions essays and present those ideas in a student’s own best voice. Working with students to examine their interests and enthusiasms and exploring what they already know, what they aspire to do, and what ignites their passion for further education is a key element of what she loves most about her job.
Irene has studied speechwriting, creative writing, and storytelling at Georgetown University and has assisted college students with their application essays for elite colleges across the nation.
She holds degrees in communications and government from George Washington University and worked in communications and policy on Capitol Hill for many years prior to joining College Bound.
In our conversation, Irene and I discussed:
How younger students can prepare themselves to be better college applicants
The importance of intentional involvement in high school
How students can stand out with their college admissions essay
Strategies for students struggling with their college essay
Essay ideas for students who aren’t sure of their college major

Every year, I see the same thing: high school seniors who find every reason not to apply for scholarships. Here is what one mom said in an online forum when asked what she wishes she had done differently during her child’s senior year:
"I wish I had pushed my HS senior to commit to applying for scholarships. Later in her senior year, she found all kinds of ways to avoid putting in the effort."- Mom of Class of 2024 Grad.
If your student is in the Class of 2025, they must start applying for scholarships immediately. Otherwise, here’s the list of “reasons” that they won’t be able to start later:
September: “School just started. I need to adjust to my new schedule before working on scholarships.”
October: “I need to work on my college applications and essays before working on scholarships.”
November: “It’s Thanksgiving! Don’t I deserve a break?!”
December: “I need to fill out the FAFSA before working on scholarships.”
January: “I need to adjust to my new spring class schedule before working on scholarships.”
February: “I need to get my college acceptance before I start working on scholarships.”
March: “My spring sport takes too much time to work on scholarships.”
April: “I need to do all the graduation prep before I work on scholarships.”
May: “Prom prep is taking up all of my free time. I can’t work on scholarships.”
June: “All of the good scholarships are closed.”
Your student’s list of “reasons” will vary, but you get the point: Students can always find a “reason” that they can’t apply for scholarships.
However, it's important to remember that the earlier they start, the more opportunities they will have. So, let's not let these “reasons” hold us back. Let's start applying for scholarships now and make the most of the opportunities available.
The hardest part of scholarships is getting started. But, Class of 2025 students who start now will not only get over this hump but also enjoy these benefits:
They will build a portfolio of scholarship essays that they can reuse for many more scholarship applications throughout their senior year.
They will have the experience and skills needed to be better scholarship applicants in the spring when their local scholarship opportunities (usually) open up.
They could win one of the $20,000, $30,000, $50,000, or other high-dollar scholarships open to seniors this fall!
It's crucial to understand the urgency of the situation. Did you know that the Class of 2025 has already missed a FULL TUITION and a FULL RIDE scholarship opportunity? Every day a student delays is another lost scholarship opportunity.
Perhaps you and your student are willing to start, but you aren’t sure how. The Scholarship GPS Course will get you and your student up to speed quickly. Here are just some of the highlights from the course:
How and where to find scholarships
How to prioritize the right scholarships
How to build a student’s Personal Narrative: The Key to Scholarship Success
How to respond to the most common scholarship essay topics
Plus, throughout the fall, I will be adding lessons on some of the biggest scholarship opportunities for the Class of 2025 - scholarships that virtually every senior should apply for!
The tools, tactics and strategies I share in the Scholarship GPS Course are the same ones I used to coach my own son to over $95,000 in scholarships, to coach Isabella to 14 scholarship wins, and to coach Talon to over $100,000 in scholarships!

I am a strong advocate for the work of Lisa Marker-Robbins and Flourish Coaching. For over a decade, Lisa has helped over 3,600 high school students and young adults gain the insight, experiences, and confidence they need to embark on their post-high school path.
Along the way, however, she noticed an alarming trend: Teens struggled to find their true purpose–and the fallout wasn’t pretty. There was a lot of uncertainty around college majors and future careers. As a result, students weren’t graduating college on time, and even when they did, they often left college underemployed or unemployed altogether.
From my perspective, gaining college and career clarity not only sets up the student to thrive in college and puts them on the path to future career success, but it’s also beneficial for finding and winning scholarships. More than half of the private scholarships my son won, both in high school and while in college, were directly related to his college major. The other scholarships, while open to students of all majors, were still won due to his compelling Personal Narrative - his story of his future plans, with the ability to point to past achievements related to those plans.
Whether your child is in high school or college, if they are unclear about their future career or even their college major, I can think of no better investment than to look into the programs that Lisa and Flourish Coaching offer. To learn more, go to http://www.FlourishCoachingCo.com/NoDebtMajors

This week I am joined by Alex McKercher. Alex is the Founder of Career Pursuit. His vision is to see Millennials and Gen Z find purpose and financial prosperity through rewarding careers, ultimately enabling them to lead fulfilling lives and make a meaningful impact on the world. Career Pursuit does this by equipping its clients with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to navigate today's job market successfully, leading to a rewarding career.
In our conversation, Alex shares his views on:
The overall job outlook for current students and recent grads.
How job applicants need to present themselves to land a job (which also works for scholarships, as well!).
The careers and college majors that will be in demand over the next 5-10 years.
Why going to college to “find your passion” is no longer practical.
To connect with this week's guest, Alex McKercher from Career Pursuit, go to CareerPursuit.net or on LinkedIn.
Alex stressed the importance of knowing your passion and career path. If your student is unsure of their path, check out the fantastic programs offered by Flourish Coaching. Having college major and career clarity will not only help with college admissions and future job prospects, but it’s also a key part of scholarship success. Scholarship GPS is my new online, on-demand, video-based course where I share my insights on how to find and earn scholarships. Each lesson is designed to be short, typically between three and ten minutes. This unique ‘bite-sized’ learning model is tailored to fit into your busy schedule, empowering you to learn at your own pace.
As a Your Daily Scholarship subscriber, you can get access to the course before the general public.
It's important to note that the course is a work in progress. While there are still lessons to be added, over 20 lessons are already uploaded and ready for viewing, and new lessons will be added regularly. This allows you to hit the ground running while new lessons are being prepared and added regularly.
One of the things that makes Scholarship GPS unique is the BONUS LESSONS included in the course. I know scholarships, but I don’t know college admissions, test prep, or other things related to college prep. But I do know professionals with expertise in those things. These trusted professionals have lessons INCLUDED in the course—a kind of high-level “101” introduction to their area of expertise.
As a thank you for your support, you can access the course at a heavily discounted pre-launch rate! You can sign up for LIFETIME ACCESS to the Scholarship GPS course for only $47! Simply use coupon code JULY2024 at checkout. Click here to sign up!
Remember, this special offer is ONLY for Your Daily Scholarship subscribers and is being offered at this discounted rate because the course is still a work in progress. But while I build out the rest of the course, you can start on your scholarship journey today! Don’t delay; coupon code JULY2024 expires on July 31, 2024.
